2025 Programme

About

ABOUT

The Whanganui Summer Programme’s bus trips, guided walks and talks are organised by
the Whanganui Summer
Programme Trust.

The Whanganui Summer Programme is coordinated by a Trust set up in 2008 to take on the role previously undertaken by the Department of Conservation.

The trustees thank all the organisations involved with the programme, including the museums, societies,
business and property owners who have enabled us to arrange such a varied programme. Many of the partner organisations who arrange and lead events have been involved for a number of years.

We hope you enjoy the Whanganui Summer Programme. We welcome feedback, so please do contact us by e-mail with your suggestions for
future events.

PROGRAMME

 2025 SUMMER PROGRAMME SCHEDULE

Local  Amazing Radio Museum

Monday 20 January New!
The museum will be open from 9am to 5pm. Entry by koha.

Vintage Weekend is an ideal time to showcase Graham and Val Hawtree’s vintage radio museum at 50 Fox Rd. Over 25 years they have collected more than 500 valve and battery radios ranging in age from 1918 through to the late 1940s. Visiting here is a journey into nostalgia to a time when sitting around the radio was a great treat and pastime.

Local  Greenbelt Walk

Thursday 23 January New!

Depart 4pm. Return approx 5.30pm. Adult $5 | Child free.
Pay at start of walk.

Meet at the top end of Victoria Ave beyond the railway line.

Join Margi Keys on a greenbelt walk between St John’s Hill and the railway line to see Sasa palmata and other botanical delights in this wild area. Ten years ago the S. palmata comprised a couple of small clumps, now it is quite extensive under the tall trees and taller bamboos, having spread by rhizomes. The green belt has some splendid natives and exotics. They must have been planted many decades ago. Natives include kahikatea, rimu, red beech, silver beech, black beech, mangeao, ti kouka, karaka and maybe the largest pukatea in Whanganui. Exotics include large crack willows, sycamore, liquidambar, Livistona australis (a palm), bamboo.

Trip  Bridge to Nowhere

Friday 24 January Favourite!

Depart 8am; return approx 5.30pm. Adult $230 | Child $125

Bus to Pipiriki, followed by 32km jet boat ride and 3km bush walk. By 1942 only three farmers remained in the Mangapurua Valley and they were eventually forced to leave. The concrete bridge is the symbol of the ill-fated settlement in this ‘valley of abandoned dreams’.
